10.7: Cleaning up the Launchpad
Re: "You can not move Apps to folders or the Desktop from the /Applications folder." Actually, you can. Just hold the Command key while dragging and dropping.

That just makes a copy of the App and still leaves the original, which still leaves it in the LaunchPad. The Trash would still be necessary for cleaning up the LaunchPad.

After further experimenting, I see this works differently for different applications. With some, holding Command moves the item, the same as Command-dragging items between disk volumes. But with others, Command-dragging works the same as Option-dragging and makes a copy of the item. Oddly inconsistent behavior. Edited on Jul 28, '11 07:00:16AM by catalert

It's not an inconsistent behaviour.

It appears that default system apps (iCal, iTunes, LaunchPad, etc.) can not be moved, but other apps, like iLife apps, apps you installed yourself, or apps from the App Store, can. The default system apps have a special permission setting. If you compare these different app types in Get Info you'll see that the default system apps have an extra entry for the "everyone" group with a "custom" privilege set. Looks like you can just change that flag to what you want or even delete it, like any other permission setting. (I didn't try, because I didn't want to toy with things.) |
