How do you make an LPD port?

I had the same issue. I have a USB connected Epson (875DC). What I ended up doing
was starting up the LPR server on W2K, making a new printer called 'lp' (the
most common UNIX default printer name) and attaching it to the USB port, I couldnt
make it work any other way. One thing you must then do is turn on printer
sharing and share it as name 'lp'. At that point, your good to go.

However, you will *probably* need to d/l the gimp-print driver set if your printer
isn't on the Apple driver list (my Epson required that). Then setup CUPS to the IP # of the W2K box and
the printer name. If you don't load gimp-print and your printer isn't
really supported by Apple, you'll see the print job just 'cancelled'

for example:
lpd://10.0.1.5/lp <- what you tell CUPS as the LPD server
