Still works fine in 10.6:
defaults write com.apple.finder AllowCutForItems 1

That did not work for me.
Changed ~/Library/Preference/com.apple.finder.plist
Not the one in System/Library/LaunchAgents
Cuts a file, but nothing to paste.

This worked, but I couldn't paste the cut file anywhere. In fact, it disappeared! I was able to undo in Finder to get it back.

Do I need to log out/in?

The file is cut & is promptly dropped in the trash. When I went to paste, the error message that I received said that the file was no longer available or had been moved. Copy & paste does work
