How do you make an LPD port?
Authored by: gommino on Oct 05, '02 02:09:49PM

This tip is just what I'm looking for. But I'm unable to create the LPD port for the printer on my Windows PC. When I try to create a new port, I only get 'Local Port', 'LPR Port' or 'Standard TCP/IP Port'. None of these seems to produce the desired result.

Please could you go into a bit more depth as to how this part is done.

Thanks,
Rob.

Problems making LPD port?
Authored by: dice on Oct 06, '02 02:00:03PM

Hi Jwillsey,

Thanks for the post, but like Gommino I am having difficulties from the PC end too.
TCP/IP print services are running, but configuring the port doesn't seems to produce the desired result. I am using an Epson Stylus Color 600 connected to the PC parallel port...

If you can help, I'd be really grateful

Thanks!!
Nick

Problems making LPD port?
Authored by: jwillsey on Oct 08, '02 12:53:24AM

I had a few e-mails from people as my tips were not enough detail to get the lpt printing up and running. I'll try again...

First, on my W2K professional Workstation (or W2K server) I enabled the TCP/IP Print Server.

Second, I verified my existing Epson print driver was working as a standard parallel printer. For my epson 600, I am using the "Epson Stylus COLOR 600 ESC/P 2" Driver. My printer name is "Epson Stylus Color 600"

Next, I added a second printer:
-Add Printer
-Local Printer (no autodetect)
-Create a new port : LPR Port
-"NAME" of my Windows 2K box in my case "JohnAMD1600" or "W2KSERVER"
-Name of Printer (original printer name) in my case "Epson Stylus Color 600"
-Pick Appropriate Manufacturer/Printer Model
-Assign Printer Name (lp or in my case LPR_600)
-Assign Share Name (lp or in my case LPR_600)
-Print a test page. If ok, you are ready for OSX, if not, retrace your steps

(You now have two printers in your printers folder. One on the parallel port, and one at LPR Port Machine Name:Original printer name)

On the Mac, I went to the Print Center as recommended, and created my printer using the IP address of my W2K machine and LPD queue name "LPR_600" I had just set up on my Win2K box. Then I went to http://127.0.0.1:631 and clicked on Printers -> Modify and changed my printer from generic PostScript to an Epson Stylus Color. It works!!

I hope this clears things up...

How do you make an LPD port?

I had the same issue. I have a USB connected Epson (875DC). What I ended up doing
was starting up the LPR server on W2K, making a new printer called 'lp' (the
most common UNIX default printer name) and attaching it to the USB port, I couldnt
make it work any other way. One thing you must then do is turn on printer
sharing and share it as name 'lp'. At that point, your good to go.

However, you will *probably* need to d/l the gimp-print driver set if your printer
isn't on the Apple driver list (my Epson required that). Then setup CUPS to the IP # of the W2K box and
the printer name. If you don't load gimp-print and your printer isn't
really supported by Apple, you'll see the print job just 'cancelled'

for example:
lpd://10.0.1.5/lp <- what you tell CUPS as the LPD server

Rather than create an LPD port on Windows, try using SMB (Windows File and Printer Sharing). Details can be found using the Gimp-Print drivers. For a commercial product, you can also use DAVE by Thursby Software Systems.
