As an alternative, you can try the open source CoRD which is lighter and allows several concurrent connections (unlike Microsoft's client last I checked)

Microsoft RDC does allow multiple connections -- to different computers or even to the same computer (Terminal Server) with different user account. This feature has been available for many years.

I was going to suggest CoRD as well.
Even though officially still in beta, this application is miles better that the Microsoft version which is arguably one of the worst pieces of Mac software ever created.
If you don't believe me, try starting it up and opening a previously saved connection settings file, editing a few of the settings and then logging in with those saved settings.
This cannot be done without quitting and restarting RDC at least once.

I would also recommend CoRD. Why waste time trimming the bloat from another application when CoRD comes bloat free out of the box?
