those Mail/AddressBook/iChat pics
This is true, iChat does a slicker job of making those Address Book TIFFs than Address Book itself. Many of my contacts have AIM, and I was able to start populating my Address Book quickly this way.
For your contacts who are more into email, the best results still come from dropping good TIFFs of your people into ~/Library/Images/People/. Name the files by their email addresses, and add .tiff on the ends. Mail.app and Address Book will pick them up automatically, and iChat should if a Buddy has that email account entered. As a bonus, display this folder as Icons, turn on icon previews, and you've got a mini-photo album ;) [Incidently, iChat and Address Book under Jaguar now keep their separate, private stash of TIFFs at ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Images/. They have cryptic names based on your Ethernet ID(!) and who knows what else. Your iChat pics, and the pics that Address Book made for you (by clicking/dropping on the headshot icon) will be in there, somewhere.] Hint: If you're taking care to make a pic manually in Photoshop, GC, or what-have-you, reduce your giant square-cropped photo to 64 x 64 and save it as an LZW-compressed Mac-ordered TIFF. We know TIFF is the format that these X apps really like. Why LZW-compressed then? To have nice small pics to trade using the MailPictures Mail.app add-on, natch. robg hinted at this freeware bundle back in December. If you hadn't heard of MailPictures, get it and add it to your Mail.app. Your inner geek will love you for it. |
