I use a similar technique for even my digital copies (which BibDesk auto-files, saving that annoying manual step). I've created a Boolean field for "Read" that I then display in the entry list view, so I can easily see which articles I've worked through. Makes prepping for annotated bibs and the like much, much more straightforward.

A combination of the Attachment tag and the Rating, Read, and IsAnnotated fields can be very powerful in seeing where the most helpful research (in your opinion) is.
