to the OP for posting this. I signed up to give a thanks

We have an iMac that refused to boot, hung at the spinning wheel/grey screen.

I tried several "fixes" that I was able to find and nothing was working; tried for two full days. The computer had new data not yet backed up to time capsule and mobileMe, so we needed it back....

Ran df
umount /dev/disk0s2
fsck_hfs -r /dev/disk0s2 (ran this well over two dozen times as each time it gave the "FAILED..." error. After running it a few times, I would let it reboot and try to load. If it wouldnt load, I would enter Single User Mode and run it some more)
Also ran fsck_hfs -f /dev/disk0s2

At some point, even though I was still getting the same errors after running the above commands, errors of invalid sibling link, FAILED, and even though it said it was modified - I would reboot from time to time - and then one time it booted back up into OSX!

So now we are backing it all up

I have the feeling the problem occurred when something happened during a time machine backup. It appears to have been looking for a network link, at some point.

But I was near shipping it to Apple. The Disk was "greyed out" in Disk Utility when booting into the CD and opening DU. Nothing in DU worked when I ran it. many other recommended commands did not work, either.

So this tip goes into the reference file! Thank you for posting it
