10.6: Verify Time Machine Backups

From Finder Help:

Verifying your backups

You can verify your backups to make sure they can be used if it ever becomes necessary to restore files.

To verify your backups:

1. Hold down the Time Machine icon in the menu bar while pressing the Option key.

2. Choose Verify Backups.

3. If you see a message that you must create a new backup, a problem has occurred that prevents Time Machine from using the existing backup. Click Start New Backup to create a new backup and remove the existing backup history (which removes your old backup).

If you click Back Up Later, you’ll be prompted with the dialog again in 24 hours. Time Machine won’t perform backups during this time.

To view the dialog at any time, hold down the Time Machine icon in the Dock and choose Back Up Now.
