Find My iPhone does not require a MobileMe subscription

It's important to note you require a new iDevice to enable this. (iPad, iPhone & iPod touch?). Once activated, you can use your account on any iDevice.

BUT you can only activate an account on a newer device a limited number of times (I believe it's three), so while it is possible to find someone with a newer device and temporarily set it up to activate your own account there is a limit to how many times this can be done.
