10.6: Limitations of TextWrangler or BBEdit from the Mac App Store
As a long time BBEdit user (like, since the first Clinton presidency), it's probably my favorite app of all time. After the App Store announcement, and some time after that upon hearing that Bare Bones was going to put their wares in the App Store, my first thought was, "I bet Apple's rules about apps not installing other apps" will be a problem for BBEdit and TextWrangler's command line tools. I had hoped that Apple could review each app on a case-by-case basis and approve at least some apps to install CLI tools. I see from this hint that is not happening yet. I still hold out hope that they will implement such a process down the road. For me, it doesn't come down to "power user" or not. I recommend TextWrangler for a lot of folks that I wouldn't call power users, just because of it's awesome text-wrangling capabilities. It just comes down to developers making the best app they can. It may take a while, but I believe Apple will see the light on this some time down the road. If an app's CLI tools pretty much just launch the GUI version of the app, there's not much potential there for danger, now is there? Common sense will prevail in the end...hopefully... |
