This has been part of the API since system 8

I'm not a serious developer, but I do know that this has been a part of "about boxes" since system 8. Just about any app that has scrolling credits in it's about box will either change direction or speed of scrolling if the user holds down any one of the modifier keys. Not really an easter egg at all.

I think you can do this in Apple works too. And Quicktime Movie App. One key usually makes the text scroll speed up, the other makes it change directions and/or scroll backwards. I guess it's just a way to control the scrolling credits if someone were to be looking for something in them?

Well, at least it brought someone some amusement. :-)

Actually I think I have an explanation for the it not working on different machines...
the option key is a key used with universal Access, if the options are turned on some keys (keypad for example) will not have the same fonction as usual. It could be true for the about box.
