This would be cool if it didn't need to quit Thunderbird first.

I find it quite easy to start composing a message in Thunderbird (TB), then anytime before I send the message, I switch back to the Finder. From there, I drag the file(s) I want to send to the TB compose window and drop them. They get attached immediately. The TB compose window doesn't need to be in the foreground or even completely visible. Just having a portion of it visible is sufficient.

Can't you just drag files onto its icon in the dock? Postbox (which is like Thunderbird on steroids) works that way. Drag files onto its icon and it'll throw up a new message window with those files in place as attachments. You can also use "Open With…" in the Finder's contextual menu and Postbox will open a new message with the selected files as and attachment.

Thunderbird doesn't let me drop any file icons onto it, at least not any of the ones I want to send, like JPG, PDF, or CSV.

Thanks for the Postbox suggestion. I see that PB is free, but with limited features; the full version costs money. I like TB because it's free and it has extensions to let me add extensions to get features that I want. I'll check out PB, though.
