Not sure if it still works, but before this option was added to the info menu, you could accomplish the task by renaming (AAC) files to ".m4b" (instead of the default ".m4a").

That might be an easier method for scripting, at least in the case of AAC-encoded files.

These days I just make use of the Audible.com app for all my audiobook-listening needs. It even works with non-Audible audiobooks (though an Audible subscription -- at about $10-$15/book -- seems to be about the cheapest way to buy audiobooks these days).
