Connecting the machine directly to your cable / dsl modem is a useful step in diagnosing the problem. If the problem goes away then your router is the issue. However the problem is not solved by this. You should still look into the problem with your router or look into replacing your router if it is an old cheap one.
This kind of issues can be caused by several things. One frequent issue with older routers is that they have to little memory to handle modern broadband effectively. This will show in timeouts or generally poor performance.
