(I just stumbled across this item... )
I too have an ext disk with multiple volumes and multiple OS versions. But the suggestion and discussion points up to some ways I can refine that for greater flexibility the next time I go at updating them.

Currently an old LaCie 120GB partitioned into 4 vols with 10.3.9, 10.4.6, 10.4.8 and 10.5.6 (not exactly sure why I have two tigers in the tank... ;) )
