Why does this site bother posting "no hints today" pieces?
Authored by: babbage on Sep 14, '10 08:14:49AM

These "no news today" posts are just noise in the RSS feed. The lack of hints today is, itself, clear evidence that there is a lack of hints today. Why bother speaking up to say there is nothing to say?

I've never understood why this site does this. I'd hoped the habit would change now that it's under new management, but apparently not.

Oh well.

In the same vein, I've always wondered why people bother to complain about trivial stuff like this. It's no great hardship, and it's easy to imagine that someone, somewhere else, might find it useful. Life isn't perfect, you know, and it's impossible for everyone to have things just the way they want them.

And then, of course, I have to start wondering why I'm complaining about the fact that you're complaining, and suddenly I have a far greater appreciation for the teachings of the Buddha.

Namaste!

The utility of such a statement is for those who check the site each day, repeatedly, to find the day's hints. I don't use rss feeds, but I believe I've heard that there are filters you can impose on them, such as "ignore posts containing the string 'no new hints'".

To answer your curiousity, I'm another one who doesn't primarily get my updates via RSS, and apprectiate knowing why there's nothing new showing up. Keeps me from repeatedly checking for new hints on a day like today... Likewise, now you can ignore the feed from this site for the rest of today!
