This is documented by Apple. There is however absolutely no need to do this manually, that's why it's kind of hidden. The iPhone will purge background apps automatically when it needs to, you can see this from the iPhone's console, and it will usually purge the 3-4 longest unused apps first.

If you think that there is no reason to do this, then start a copy of Copilot, the GPS navigation app, and then swap to another app. Then watch as you battery gauge drains very quickly. That's just one example. Many apps running in the background tend to drain the battery quickly.
