Yes, this is completely valid and works quite well, with a few provisos.

Please note that programs that have constantly running backends do not die from this, like the Mail application for example. The mail app might not appear to be running, but the background processes that do "Push" are still running. In order to restart mail you need to do the "2-button hold until it resets" method.

I know this because I occasionally have to restart mail because my company's Exchange server does funny things and mail doesn't re-connect properly.
