Re-enable the Refresh button in Safari 5
As rmanke mentioned above, there's a clockwise-open-arrow reload button in the location window of the Toolbar, to the right of the RSS button, in both Safari 4 and Safari 5. As far as I'm concerned, that's a ridiculous spot for it: You could type Cmd-R five times before homing in just once on that obscure icon with a mouse pointer. Besides, as others have said, keyboard commands are almost always faster than drag-point-and-click commands, anyway.
However, if you're already using the mouse in the vicinity of the Tab Bar or Toolbar, for example, it can indeed be more convenient to click on a nearby reload button than to enter Cmd-R. So I, too, bemoaned the disappearance of the left-sided reload icon in Safari 4...until I read the JavaScript hint posted here last year by isaaclimdc. This bookmarklet has worked well for me in both Safari 4 and Safari 5, and offers the added advantage of not gunking up the works with yet another dysfunctional extension. Ahem. Note that by placing the bookmarklet in the first (i.e., leftmost) position on the Bookmarks Bar, you may alternatively enter Cmd-1 to reload the page, which is often quicker than typing Cmd-R. And FWIW, I use a bold up-arrow from the Character Palette as the reload icon: ⬆ |
