Spotlight searching customization tips

Searching for exact phrases, contained within quotation marks, is weird and unpredictable on my Leopard Macs.

Example:

I have an email with the subject:

5.3 fixed the forkin' lines

If I do a Spotlight search for:
"the forkin' line"

... the email will not be found.

If I search for this, instead:
"the forkin' lines"

... then the email is found.

So that implies that quoting the string will find whole words only.
