How does this work?

Presumably Wikipedia writes a cookie to store your preference. Does Dictionary present that cookie to Wikipedia? If yes, then this must require that you had used Safari as your browser, as Dictionary is unlikely to read cookies from Firefox or other browsers.

Don't quote me on this, but I think all applications that use the built-in Webkit renderer, including Safari and Dictionary, all share the same cookies.
