Thanks KyleH, great tip! This works for OpenOffice .odt files too, where changing the extension to .zip doesn't work with Finder. I can have Quicksilver perform 'Stuffit Expander - Open File… - *.odt', avoiding the need to have Stuffit hanging around the Dock.

A note to commenters:
Why don't you not start your comments with 'Why don't you'? I enjoy your contributions enormously (often more than the original post), but I find the tone of one-upmanship tiresome and unnecessary. Let's thank the poster for creating the debate - not everyone can calculate the topography of their navels in machine code…
