Wrong - if you want to, you're free to download the entire collection. But you can just download individual packages without that overhead. To that extent, it's less overhead than MacPorts - you don't need anything installed except the package you're obtaining.

Unfortunately, rudix has very, very few ports available. And the only thing I've used it for hasn't been terribly great - I downloaded their Midnight Commander package (the one on MacPorts is not working for me on Snow Leopard). But, the build on rudix doesn't exit properly - I get back to the shell, but there's still an mc process running, pegging a cpu core. Not sure if the bug is in the version of mc rudix is using, or in how they've built it, but I never used to have that issue…
