Wish I had seen this sooner. I not only was being forced on each sync to downsample over 1100 tunes (about 2-3 hours; and of course if you cancel, you walk away with no music) but I also kept getting error 13109 by using the 'Fill free space with music' option.

I ended up doing a factory wipe, which cured all of that, including the sync issue described in this hint, and repeatedly could connect and sync and would only swap out 30-90 random songs (about 15 minutes at most) but when I restored again from backup to push my 80-ish apps and all their data (particularly my SMS and MMS history), the sync issue promptly returned. Some sort of backup data must be involved.

I will assume this 11*censored*12 fix will work; if not, I will report back.
