One possible fix for remote/mic on the iPhone's headphones
Authored by: wsdr on Apr 15, '10 10:15:35AM

Good tip. But the cable can definitely go bad. I run with my headset on and sometimes sweat will get on/run down the cord. Eventually mine started skipping in the middle of playback, or stopping and starting back up. At first I though it was from joggling around, but then I realized it was the mic and controls getting damp. Eew.

It finally died. With nothing to lose, I removed the mic assembly by carefully prying it apart. Then I removed the control button, taking care to leave the speaker wire intact. Then I taped it back up and use it as my running headset. It has no remote, but it can get wet and keeps right on working.
