10.6: Set up Time Machine on networked AFP volume

As of 10.6.3, Time Machine tries to increase the size of the sparse bundle to the maximum available, which is a bit of a problem for this backup technique!

10.6: Set up Time Machine on networked AFP volume

You can limit the maximum amount that TimeMachine will back up using its preferences:

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine MaxSize 262144000

The MaxSize is given in kB, so the above limits TM to 250GB of backups before it starts thinning them.

To revert to an unlimited amount, use

defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine MaxSize
