New logic board for older G5 iMacs with bad capacitors
Okay, I tried this today (March 15, 2010). I have a first generation 17" iMac G5. I called the AppleCare number listed in the previous postings. I spoke with a Tyson about my machine's shut-down problem. He told me I would have to take my machine to an Apple Authorized Service Center to get it checked and gave me a phone number. When I mentioned that there was an Apple program to replace bad logic boards due to bad capicitors, he told me he know nothing about it. He excused himself for a couple of minutes and came back telling me he had found the repair program to which I was referring, but that it had ended on December 15th, 2008. I asked if it had been extended. He saw nothing on his screen indicating that. I asked if there was another person to whom I could speak that might be able to authorize the logic board replacement. He got Sean on the phone from tier 2 support. Sean told me my machine was out of warranty and nothing could be done - any repairs would be billable. I told him I wasn't asking for a warranty repair - I was asking about Apple's logic board replacement program - whether there was an extension to the program which ran through 2008. He insisted that the machine could not be repaired since it was more than 3 years from date of purchase and was out of warranty. I even mentioned the posts on this web site. All I kept getting back was that a 5 year old machine had served its useful life and there was nothing that could be done. Eventually he just said good-bye and hung up. I am a Mac guy, so I'll stick with the product... it's just instances like this that really leave a bad taste in one's mouth. Some people have had success calling Apple for this repair - it's obviously a matter of luck with whom you speak whether you get a warranty repair or get hung up on... their policy should be consistent!!!

Hey Tony, sorry you didn't have the same type of luck. As it turns out, when I brought my mac to the mac store, they did confirm with out and questions that it was the logic board, due to about 5 blown caps on the capacitors and 3 that were leaking. when they started talking prices, I told them what apple care had told me about the extended replacement program. he questioned it and told me that it had ended about a year ago. he checked the ticket that apple care had opened and it was indeed stated that the repair would be covered if the problem was confirmed. He spoke to his manager about it and she didn't even hesitate, stating if thats what they said then we will repair it at no cost.

I just called today and got the same response Tony got. "This is a 5-year old computer. The warranty has ended. The replacement program has ended. You can pay for repair or buy a new computer." |
