You could also mount the volume like normal using the Connect to Server command and add the mounted volume to the login items. I have been doing this since 10.2, probably could have been done in earlier versions I just never tried.

You can't do that when you're actually on the server you want to connect to; it tells you to access the files locally instead. At least, this is most definitely the case on 10.5.8 Server -- am pretty sure it's the same on earlier versions too.
