New logic board for older G5 iMacs with bad capacitors
Authored by: gigimorphe on Feb 23, '10 09:39:20AM

there is not just caps problem.the main failure is the low level engineering.no good surge protection low caps on the psu too much heat.
usually these caps r designed till 6.3v and if they blow they having trough fet regulator over 6v may 12V peak.this can cause damage on some ics
all component r rohs (lead free) the soldering quality r rubbish same as dell hp toshiba sony nec advent gateway.
mainly its all about luck with these shocked logic boards.
i doing my job now 17 year and i can tell you the quality of component level engineering going down.i dont understand how some companies survive with all they rubbish.
i believe one day this gonna knock down some companies.
we cannot make crap and sale like gold all the time :-))

about parts: if you strugling to get caps you can try www.tme.eu i think 100 capacitors 1600uf 6.3v cost round £3 or £4 plus shipping.the price depend on size if i gonna fit i will fit 2200uF insted of 1600uf this save more power on the logic board
dont forgot the melting point of solder is 200C and rohs (lead free)is above 220C you have to use esd mat with wrist strap also multicore flux.but carefull with this flux (cancer) extractor neded.same as when you working on bga machine.then pcb flux cleaner and pcb lacquer and you done after replace you can have 3 beeps failure mean ram bank not passed the test.if you have good eye and no shaky hands
from too much pint then you can continue to find out and replace the ram ics
hope this help to someone
if you have any question please feel free to ask for any brands
regards
gilbert

See http://www.badcaps.net/ for a guy who has made an entire business just replacing bad capacitors in many different vendors' computers (including G5 iMacs). He sells sets of capacitors for you to replace yourself and he has a repair service where you send him the logic board and he will replace the capacitors and return it to you. Disclaimer: I haven't used him myself.

my friend i am experienced engineer i have all equipment and knowledge to replace components on the mother boards.i am not a beginner.
i dont have to order those capacitors that site r expensive they selling kit for 22 usd kit contain max 10 capacitors i can order from tme.eu 100 for 10 usd.pointless to go backwards.
but anyway thank you for the attention.my post was about quality no about business.i try to explain to people the fact about cooked board if caps fail mean instead of 5v you got over some ttl and cmos r sensitive on high voltage.
personally i dont trust main power i have racmount ups generator and i filtering the power from mains for my self this keep longer life to any device.of corse with changed caps but on the begining when the device was purchased.when i buy product i always double check how they made and what they done..
regards
gigi
