Recover missing-but-there Time Machine backups

My (uncertain) understanding of this is, to TimeMachine as soon as you're not anymore on the very same system and CPU hardware, the backup does not belong to this machine.
So, whenever you boot from your external disk, you cannot access the previous backups, unless you use the "option" procedure which basically tells TM to specifically look elsewhere for once.
Mind you, this happens too if you had a CPU card repaired or exchanged by Apple. You come home smiling with an almost brand new machine, and then TM just won't work. You call Apple. Only answer: option key, no other solution...
