New logic board for older G5 iMacs with bad capacitors
Authored by: peachycream on Feb 15, '10 01:14:41PM

I've been reading people's relatively easy experiences getting help from Apple, and I wish I had the same! My iMac 20-inch G5 cut out yesterday--just shut off as if the power had gone out. I've been resetting the SMU externally and internally both, no luck. There's an initial little sigh when I press the power-on button, then nothing at all except LED 1 lights up.

I called tech support this morning and spoke to customer relations this afternoon. The CR person was adamant that Apple "didn't have the parts" to fix this. How can this be? I made my case for wanting to stay a loyal Apple customer if she would only help the cause a bit. No dice!

Three years ago, when the fan was speeding non-stop and the machine was emitting the smell of burning rubber, Apple did cover the replacement of the logic board. Twice, because the first one didn't take. They may have replaced the power supply then, too.

Any ideas, short of taking the machine in for service? Do you think the fix could be as simple as replacing the PRAM battery?
