It still works the same way – see my post Update: Moving from PPC to Intel and from 10.5 to 10.6 – and still keeping the backup! a few slots above. You just need to be sure to have the proper tools, some of which may need to be extracted from a previous installation.

Hi,
Snow Leopard
It is not extremely difficult, but one needs to be very precise and concentrated when messing with the internals here, so I recommend treating these things with respect and caution. (And with additional backups – I cannot stress this point enough!)
Properly weighing the risks against the chances is a good thing. I would not categorically advise against you trying this, but even with a detailed description at hand you will need to decide for yourself whether you feel up to it (possibly after non-destructively exploring the terrain). This concept basically applies to many hints on this site. One more thing: I've been describing the structures and procedures regarding a "plain" system being backed up. If you have File Vault enabled (encrypted home folder) the mechanisms should generally be similar, but some further details may need to be taken care of, and the matter of continued accessibility of the encrypted backups would also have to be verified. ---

Not to worry thanks... I have a limited backup from my laptop anyway, so it "only" needed to backup 50GB. Therefore it only needed to remove about three months of the oldest backups in order to fit on the TC.

Not a bad view on things, but one can always learn more over time. ---
