One possible fix for a Mac that won't sleep its display
Authored by: processfive on Dec 18, '09 08:13:23AM

Likewise, pages that automatically refresh (either through a simple page refresh or via an AJAX or other scripted refresh) can prevent your Mac from sleeping. When I have Gmail open in a tab in Firefox (even if it isn't the selected tab), my Mac simply will not put itself to sleep. Closing non-static pages or closing Firefox altogether solves the problem. I suspect that it has something to do with the browser caching the new page content on disk, thus resetting the sleep timer.
