An IR command for exiting Front Row via EyeTV remote
Authored by: auco on Dec 17, '09 10:48:07AM

as I had to find out the hard way: Snow Leopard sucks with FrontRow and EyeTV. Besides the fact that PyeTV is broken under SL, I couldn't use my AppleRemote anymore, as Apple changed the Remote behaviour very drastically (not only system-wide, but also fast-forwarding behaviour in FrontRow for example).

First, I tried SofaControl from gravityapps.com that worked well with EyeTV and FrontRow; also provides app switching / exiting / sleeptimer etc…

...but in the meanwhile I switched to Plex with xTV skin. Plex also promted me to download The Candelair driver that adds a Leopard Compatibility Mode for Apple Remotes: http://www.iospirit.com/labs/candelair/
yay!

While Plex needs some tweaking and manual studying to make it work (hint: disable "Libary Mode" and choose "c" to set up the folder's contents - it then automatically loads posters and descriptions… quite cool stuff… but your folder structure must be in a certain style that Plex can handle this).

Now I have a Plex'ed FrontRow that's a little bit more like what I initially would have expected from Apple's FrontRow!

Cheers,
Michael

yeah plex is a pretty sweet package and i fiddled around with it a bit, but why download 100MB worth of application when frontrow and eyeTV do everything i need anyway.
Seems that i really need to post all my setup details for ppl.

Frontrow can link to external drives and network drives if you store your movies there. its a pretty straightforward thing to get it working and keep the external drives connected. If you load all the right codecs on quicktime then frontrow has no issues. I have candleAir installed for remote compatibilty and also Perian installed for my codecs.

PS: Your post sounds more like an advert for Plex hehe.

oh just a note on pyetv. yeah i originally used it and thought it was great (needs a little bit of work to iron some bugs tho), but with a universal remote and the eyeTV remote you can set it all up so you dont need pyetv at all.
I would fully recommend TvRow if you are setting up via a secondary monitor though!
