10.6: How to install Win XP Pro Service Pack 3 in Boot Camp 3
The issue here as I recall is that Windows is trying to use space on the secondary volume to store the updates it is downloading. If the volume does not have write access, the update fails. You would think Windows update could do a simple thing like check to see if the partition it is trying to write to can actually be written to, but apparently that is too much to ask…
FYI, another option, and a handy thing to do in general is to simply slipstream the latest service pack into your Windows install CD and burn a new copy. This can save a lot of time and trouble post-install loading a million different OS updates.

What's interesting is that *all* the other updates run just fine, so I don't think it's a storage space issue. Not quite sure what's happening, just glad I found the fix (wish I would've found it before I wasted four hours fighting it, though!). Edited on Nov 16, '09 10:02:26AM by robg
