Disk Utility's RAID feature doesn't seem to work
Authored by: MacLane on Oct 19, '09 10:22:03AM

I used it with good results. I set up 2 pairs both striped (RAID 0) on a Mac Pro. I got roughly 2 to 3 times faster copies and duplications. I tried RAID 10 but the speeds were reduced too much - - down to what you'd expect from a single drive. I also tried mirroring (RAID 1) by itself, but while someone had commented that it did not slow his throughput by a significant amount, it did slow mine down too much (maybe 30%--I didn't make note of any of my figures as I didn't expect to be conveying them to others) to put up with on my 2 x 2.66 Dual-Core Xeon. To sum up, copying and startup is much faster, but the computer does not otherwise seem any zippier with the applications I use.
