10.6: Reveal location of recent items in the Finder

this is useful, but i have long wondered:

where is the actual folder containing aliases to the recent items themselves? i use recent items a lot, and after updates or reinstalls there may be may be several identically-named versions of the same app.

i'd like to find the folder and delete items so the menu contains only what i need.

any idea how?

I don't know, but applications can have their own. Like see Create a stack of recent BBEdit items.
