Use RDC instead?

If you are connecting to a Windows box why not use Remote Desktop for windows:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/remote-desktop/default.mspx

It is much, much faster than VNC and also free.

RDP is only available on the Professional/Business versions of Windows; XP's and Vista's Home Editions do not include it.
Also, RDP has some disadvantages over a separate VNC server, most notably that the local user will have his screen automatically blanked if someone connects using RDC.

There are better RDC clients to be had other than Microsoft's own; first among them for the Mac is CoRD. Far better management of saved connections and much more Mac-like.
