10.6: Permanently disable spelling correction in TextEdit
Authored by: David Allen on Sep 26, '09 08:28:36AM

Is this feature, although triggered in TextEdit, actually more global in Snow Leopard? Because it was affecting me in other apps, such as in comment boxes on the internet using Safari. I have enough trouble writing well in English and this was constantly making my comments look stupid. I am not analfabeto!

I ran across a hint for this new autocorrection feature somewhere a few weeks back and thought that it might be a real help to me. So I activated it. Then promptly forgot about it. I started seeing really stupid errors in comments I make on various blogs and things, but well after it was too late to correct. However, I could not remember where I had activated this thing and it was driving me nuts. I was afraid to post, for fear of really appearing stupid.

The other day I came across the new feature mentioned somewhere, so I immediately went to TextEdit and disabled it, bam, no more problems in Safari.

Man, I *wish* TextEdit was the controlling entity for this. I've been trying since way back in Leopard to figure out how to get iCal to stop underlining people's last names in red all the time. I can turn off "Check spelling as you type" in a given event's Notes field (via a right-click), but it always comes back the next time I create/edit another (or the same!) event...

I'm guessing that there's probably a hidden preference I could edit (via defaultswrite?), but I hesitate to attempt such things willy-nilly...

<sigh>
