10.6: Sleep and lock display with hot corner
Authored by: eagle on Sep 22, '09 08:08:48AM

Wat I want is the functionality from every version of OS X prior to this one:

I have my preferences set to require a password when waking from sleep or screensaver, and I have my screen saver preferences set for 10 minutes on AC, and 1 minute on battery. What I do NOT like is that, starting with 10.6, this makes my screen lock after 1 minute if I am running on battery power.

Is there any way to configure 10.6 to act like every prior version, that is, to differentiate between having the display sleep at 1 minute, but NOT having the screen lock until the screensaver kicks in? So far I haven't figured out how to do that.

In 10.6 Security preferences there is the option to set how long after display sleep or screen saver that the password is required. So simply setting that time to 5 minutes (or 15 minutes, those are the two closest options in your case) will do exactly what you require. Hope this helps.

Steve, that solves the battery issue, but it doesn't solve the issue when my system is plugged in.

I currently have a hot corner set to activate screen saver. When I leave my desk, I move the mouse to that corner, which activates the screen saver and also locks my screen.

I guess what I'm seeing is that Apple "fixed" what wasn't a bug... they removed functionality, and so far there's no way to get it back. :(

This bothered me a long time ago (Tiger? Panther?). The solution I found was to have my "screensaver" run an application or AppleScript that invokes display sleep.

The program is/was ScriptSaver and it worked flawlessly for me. My screen saver would effectively turn off the display, and since it was a screen saver, you would need to enter a password to unlock the display.

Bad news: Desktop and Screen Saver preferences in Snow Leopard claim that ScriptSaver 2.10 (the version I'm running) is incompatible and to contact the vendor for the upgrade.

Good news: ScriptSaver 2.11 claims to be Snow Leopard compliant! (I haven't tested this yet, though.)
