10.6: Make List view Stacks work like Grid view Stacks

This is a really interesting new hidden feature!

I don't like Grid View in stacks because of the major truncation of names and the massive icons; and I too find List View annoying for issues with aliases and for the fact that you have to keep moving all across the screen and it is very easy to get shunted back up the tree due to a new column overlapping an earlier one.

This New List View takes the best of both in a way, what with Grid's new ability to dig down. It is curious that it takes a fixed width rather than adjusting to filename lengths like Old List View though.

A couple of interesting things:
- I have my hard drive as a list view stack in the dock. With this new view I'm seeing a very odd effect that appears to be unique to /Applications/Utilities – if I dig down to that folder and then go back, it spins the view around in the process; for any other folder it seems to just fade out and in depending on required height.

- In trying to get a better look at that effect I held down shift while climbing back up from /Applications/Utilities. That worked nicely and indeed it did show a full spin, anticlockwise, in the process. I then tried holding shift while digging down. Bad idea, something missing in the development there and it doesn't fade back in, just distorts whatever is in the window behind. I guess that's one reason it is not an official option.

- That they broke nested sorting in stacks with SL is the main thing annoying me now; any hidden option to get that back? :)

The spin is not unique to the Utilities folder. I got it in a few different locations. From what I've gathered, the effect's appearance is dependant upon the folder you are going back to. If the folder you're going back to requires a scrollbar (like Applications), then the current folder spins when it fades out.

Ha. I held "shift" down to slow down the effect as I drilled down into a folder. First part of the effect looked ominiously like the way the screen behaves during a kernel panic. Freaked me out for a second!
