Safely and socially share a wireless network
Problem is, if one of your free customers enjoys pedopornography the police will come after you. You will not be able to proof that it was someone else, since the link and IP are yours.

Ahh... The cries of "Think of the children" echoes through the halls once again. The greatest generation of WWII giving way to a society scared of every stranger...

Good luck!

well, that's the way it's supposed to work, but my sense is that if the police decide you're guilty, they're going to push the issue and you'll end up having to prove that all the gallons of circumstantial evidence they drudge up against you doesn't amount to anything. The whole 'innocent until proven guilty' thing is a it of a pipe dream in modern law.
That being said, though, if the cops have gotten to the point where their tracing some illegal activity through the ISP, then they already have a lot of information that will put you in the clear (in fact, by that point they probably already know who the guilty party is, and are just looking to tie the knots), so it's really not a worry. as to the more difficult question of whether you want to give some stranger the opportunity to do something potentially illegal or immoral using your connection... well, half an hour a week looking at server logs and blocking objectionable websites or perpetrator's machines should resolve any moral issues.

Agreed. It will be easier (though still not easy) to convince a judge about the insecurity of your network when there's simply no such security at all. When someone hacks into your WPA secured network, then how to even start trying to explain you're innocent...? |
