Frustration (doesn't work on German keyboard)
Authored by: AndreasG on Sep 05, '02 11:10:34AM

One big disappointment for me when moving to 10.2 was that Apple still didn't think about making a keyboard shortcut available to cycle windows for non-english keyboard layouts.

On my German keyboard, I get the tilde (~) when I press Alt+N. If I hit Command-Alt-N (which would be equivalent to Cmd-tilde...), nothing happens. I still cannot cycle through my open windows!!! This is a pain in the behind...

Do users from other countries have the same problem with their non-english keyboard layouts? Please report this to Apple, it would be great to have it fixed. I hate using the mouse to switch between several open browser windows every time...

Or does anybody know a workaround, so that I can make the "Cycle Windows" shortcut available on my German keyboard??? I would appreciate it *very* much, as this would dramatically improve my Mac OS X experience...

TIA, Andreas

You can -- sort of -- get this to work on a German keyboard. In System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard access (Tastatursteuerung), there is an entry to cycle windows.

Unfortunately, this will cycle through all windows of all apps. Also, "w" interferes with pico's "Find", so I set it to "1" on my machine.

But I'm also disappointed Apple still didn't get this to work on German keyboards.
