Authentication error

Unfortunately, it seems that with an account that uses the "Address" field to authenticate a connection (e.g., Gmail), opening mail after executing the above hint results in an error claiming "The user name or password for 'account description' is incorrect." This makes sense, as Mail is using the "Address" field as the user name.

No, this does not make sense to me. Why would Mail use the value from the Email Address field? There's a dedicated field for User Name, which should be used during authentication.

(Of course, when adding additional addresses, one should register those in Gmail, and optionally tell Gmail to use one's own server, for otherwise Gmail will refuse to use that Sender address. But that's an issue with sending, not with receiving. And for sending, Mail has a User Name as well, and should not use the value from Email Address.)

Oh, this is a hint about the iPhone, not about Mail.app. Maybe it does make sense after all! (Though I doubt any email client would use the Email Address field during authentication, but I don't use an iPhone so I cannot check.)

(Hoping the upcoming release of macosxhints.com allows for editing or even deleting comments...)
