Actually, you can just put, for instance:

~/Downloads/.DS_Store

Into the address bar - Safari will still interpret it.

I was going to mention this too, but thought for the sake of clarity I'd just give the full path as Safari does indeed resolve the tilde (~) automatically (both when dragging from address, and entering manually via. the Bookmarks interface).

The tilde is indeed an excellent shortcut.
