Sleep displays with password protection

If you don't mind installing a small piece of software, I can recommend Sizzling Keys from Yellowmug Software : http://www.yellowmug.com/sk4it/

It started as an iTunes controller with global hotkeys, (the hotkeys work regardless of whatever the active application is when you press them) but also includes the ability to assign hotkeys to some OS functions like putting the computer to sleep, locking the screen (I set mine to option-control-command+L to lock the screen quickly whenever I leave the computer) and starting the screen saver.

It lives as a preference pane, is donation-ware and has never failed me. As a bonus, it allows you to set global hotkeys for iTunes song ratings... e.g.: control-shift+{0,1,2,3,4,5} to assign 0-1-2-3-4 or 5 stars to the currently playing song without even stopping what you were doing.
