Couldn't you just check the box "Requre password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" in Preferences > Security?

Yeah, I'm not getting this either.

Just use an all black screen saver, turn on the setting you mentioned and set the upper right corner as a hot corner to activate the screen saver.

Then, when you're ready to hit the sack, throw your mouse pointer in the upper right corner and go to bed.
