Sleep displays with password protection

I use Keychain for this.

In Keychain preferences, I choose "Show Status in Menu Bar"

Just use a black screensaver if you want. If you choose "Lock Screen" from the menu lock icon, it'll take you straight to your screensaver and require a password on waking.

Sleep displays with password protection

I too use Keychain for this, but it's only 50% of the solution.

In Keychain preferences, choose "Show Status in Menu Bar".
In Screen Save preferences, choose Upper Right corner to activate screen sleep.

When you're ready, choose "Lock Screen" from the menu lock icon, and within the 1-2 seconds for it to take effect, slide your mouse the two inches to the upper right corner.

There, sleep screen + password screen lock. You'll get the hang of it.
