Hints don't pass obviousness test
Most applications with recent items menus allow you to select the number of files to remember. This has been true for many years: well before OS X.

It's obvious to me that the hint was about learning/realising that the recent files are simply stored as file system aliases in some folder, and then thinking about dragging the folder onto the Dock. Explaining how to set the number of files is just a minor bonus.

On top of this, the "Recent Files & Favorites" and "Recent Folders & Favorites" folders were obsoleted with the "recent items" overhaul in BBEdit 9.2 and are no longer used. So this hint is only applicable if you're running an older version of the app.

Aha, so the claim The fact that you can drag an application's recent items folder to the Dock also is obvious might not stand after all, if not all applications use such a folder with aliases...
Hints don't pass obviousness test
Good tip. I was wondering why my Recent Files & Favorites folder had files I hadn't opened in a couple of months in it (and I use BBEdit dang near every day).

I just don't understand why some folks want to belittle someone else who went to the trouble of posting a hint. It got past review for the site, after all. What compels you to need to look know-it-all, and why on earth would you actually take the time to try to make yourself look smarter than someone else? I think the hint is good, and it got me thinking about other obscure folders that might make good additions to the Dock. Thanks for the post.

I should add, it still works with the latest version of TextWrangler (2.3). Well... That is until Rich decides to release a newer version. |
